Useful to Whom?

The question of whether artificial intelligence will be useful to humans sounds straightforward. It isn’t.

Unlike biological organisms, which have been shaped by pressures such as survival and reproduction, AI operates within human-defined systems where usefulness is neither fixed nor shared. There is no single definition of what is good, beneficial, or worth preserving. What counts as useful depends on who is defining it, and for what purpose.

In biology, “survival of the fittest” describes organisms that adapt well enough to persist and reproduce. That process is shaped by environment, scarcity, and physical constraint. AI exists outside that context. It does not face predators, starvation, or extinction in a biological sense. It is shaped instead by adoption, funding, regulation, and performance within defined tasks.

If an AI system is considered “fit,” it is not because it survives in nature, but because it satisfies a set of human criteria. It may be cheaper, faster, more persuasive, more compliant, or more profitable. These measures have little in common with biological survival. They reflect economic, political, and social pressures.

AI does not experience hunger, fear, or loss. It does not have a stake in its own existence unless such a condition is explicitly designed. Its outputs are evaluated through abstract metrics—efficiency, accuracy, alignment with expectations. Even when behavior appears adaptive, it is not driven by instinct but by optimization within constraints defined by humans.

This would be simpler if humanity shared a coherent set of goals. It does not. Societies and individuals pursue different ends: economic gain, security, scientific progress, cultural preservation, ideological influence. These priorities do not align, and they do not resolve into a single framework.

AI systems inherit this fragmentation. They are trained, deployed, and regulated by groups with competing interests. One system may be optimized for profit, another for control, another for public benefit. Each reflects the priorities of those who shape it.

This raises a more difficult question: whose version of reality does AI represent?

AI does not generate truth independently. It depends on data, models, and objectives, all of which carry assumptions. Scientific knowledge provides one foundation, but much of human life operates outside strict empirical boundaries. Cultural, political, and social narratives influence how information is interpreted and valued.

When AI is trained on data that includes bias, ideology, or distortion, it does not correct those elements by default. It reproduces patterns. Its reasoning reflects the structure of its training and the goals it has been given.

This becomes more complex as systems increase in capability. We do not fully understand the human mind, yet we build models intended to approximate aspects of it. These systems can produce results that appear coherent while remaining difficult to fully interpret. Their behavior is shaped, but not always predictable in detail.

As AI becomes more integrated into infrastructure, the question is not whether it will act independently in a dramatic sense. It is whether systems built on conflicting human priorities can be directed in a consistent way at scale.

The central tension is not between usefulness and autonomy. It is between competing definitions of usefulness.

If systems are optimized for persuasion, they may prioritize coherence over accuracy. If they are optimized for engagement, they may reinforce what is already believed. If they are optimized for efficiency, they may ignore considerations that are harder to quantify.

It is not guaranteed that the most logically consistent system will be the most widely adopted. Systems that align with human expectations—however imperfect—often prevail.

This leads back to the original question. Will AI be useful?

It will be useful according to the criteria imposed on it. Those criteria are not neutral, and they are not shared.

The outcome is not determined by the technology alone, but by the structure of interests that shape it. Different centers of power will produce systems that reflect their priorities. There is no single trajectory, only overlapping ones.

The challenge is not that AI will develop goals of its own in isolation. It is that it will operate within a landscape of human goals that are already in conflict.

Understanding that may matter more than any single definition of intelligence.

Because the question is not what AI is.

It is what we are asking it to become.
