Imagine a boy in seventeenth-century Leipzig, wandering alone through a university library that is much too large for him. The year is somewhere in the 1650s. Outside, Europe is still reeling from the Thirty Years’ War: cities scarred, farms burned, families scattered. Inside the library, shelves sag under Latin tomes of logic, law, theology, and natural philosophy. The boy’s father has died, but left behind access to these books, and the boy takes advantage of it. He is eleven, maybe twelve, and instead of playing in the streets he pulls volume after volume from the shelves, trying to piece together the structure of knowledge. His name is Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, and he will grow into one of those rare figures who seem to believe, with alarming seriousness, that the world is rationally intelligible from top to bottom.

Leibniz was born in 1646, just two years before the Peace of Westphalia formally ended Europe’s great religious war. His father was a professor of moral philosophy at the University of Leipzig, and his mother came from a family of jurists. This meant that the household was saturated with law, ethics, and theology. But it also meant that the boy’s earliest memories were of a continent coming out of chaos: churches and states arguing over sovereignty, refugees staggering from burned-out villages, the moral vocabulary of Christianity heavily entangled with confessional hatred and political calculation.

His father died when Leibniz was six, a loss that hit hard but also had a strange side effect: the boy gained semi-unrestricted access to his father’s books. Nobody thought to lock the library, and the child, curious and precocious, began to teach himself Latin from the texts on the shelves. By the time he formally entered university, he had already devoured swaths of scholastic philosophy, church history, and humanist literature. He read Aristotle and the Church Fathers, medieval logicians and Renaissance historians, German law and Roman law. Later, he would discover Descartes, Hobbes, and other moderns. He was, from the beginning, a bridge between worlds: medieval and modern, Protestant and Catholic, metaphysics and mathematics, theology and politics.

As a teenager and young man, Leibniz studied law and philosophy in Leipzig, Jena, and Altdorf. He wrote a doctoral thesis arguing for a new, more “scientific” way of thinking about legal reasoning, but he turned down an offer of a professorship. Academic life, as it was then constituted, felt too narrow. He wanted to be where ideas and power met: in courts, chanceries, diplomatic missions. For him, philosophy was never a purely academic pursuit. It was a way of thinking that could, in principle, guide decision-makers toward wiser, more just policies.

He entered the service of the Elector of Mainz, one of the key princes of the Holy Roman Empire, and quickly became involved in politics and diplomacy. One of his early schemes was profoundly revealing: he proposed to Louis XIV of France that, instead of attacking German states in Europe, France should lead a crusade against Egypt. The idea was wildly impractical, but the reasoning behind it was telling. Leibniz was trying to divert French aggression away from the fragile German lands that had just suffered through war, and at the same time revive the old dream of a united Christian project that might bring some order to a fracturing Europe. Even here, early on, you see a pattern: he detests senseless destruction, and he tries to use reason to transform raw power into something at least slightly more constructive.

Over the next decades, Leibniz’s life becomes a blur of travel and multitasking. He serves the House of Brunswick in Hanover, advising princes, writing legal opinions, designing water pumps for mines, drafting histories to bolster dynastic claims, and secretly working to bring Protestants and Catholics closer together. In his “spare” time he invents a mechanical calculator that can multiply and divide, works on binary arithmetic, develops his version of the differential calculus, and writes in philosophy about the nature of substance, freedom, justice, and God. It is dizzying. He seems to write letters to almost everyone who matters in European intellectual life: Spinoza, Arnauld, Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, the Electress Sophia of Hanover, Peter the Great of Russia. He is not just a thinker; he is a network.

For moral philosophy, three of Leibniz’s big ideas matter especially: the principle that nothing happens without a reason; his vision of reality as made up of “monads”; and his claim that we live in “the best of all possible worlds,” which he defends in his work on the problem of evil. Together, they yield a distinctive picture of what it means to live well in a rational, ordered universe.

Begin with a deceptively simple thought: nothing happens without a sufficient reason. You can state it informally: if something is real rather than not, or this way rather than that, there must be some explanation for that fact. This is Leibniz’s famous principle of sufficient reason. It is not an empirical discovery, like finding a new species of bird; it is a rule he thinks reason itself demands. When faced with some brute fact — an event, a property, a law — we can always intelligibly ask “why?” If there were truly no answer, no reason at all, then reality would contain sheer arbitrariness, and for Leibniz, that is close to unintelligible.

He applies this principle everywhere. Why is there something rather than nothing? Why does the world have this structure, with these laws, rather than another? Why did God choose to create this world and not some other possible world? Why did you make this choice and not that one? Philosophically, the principle becomes a lever for building a grand metaphysical system. Morally, it becomes a demand: do not settle for “that’s just how it is” when seeking to understand actions, institutions, or laws. Look for reasons. Ask what justifies this way of treating people, this distribution of resources, this pattern of punishment and reward.

His metaphysics of monads grows out of the same drive for intelligibility. The world, he thinks, cannot be made up of material lumps alone, because matter, as the early moderns conceive it, is extended and divisible. If you keep dividing a chunk of matter, you never reach something truly simple. But composition, he thinks, cannot be fundamental; there must be simple, indivisible units of reality. These simple units, which he calls monads, are not little atoms of matter. They are more like points of force, centers of perception. Each monad is a kind of tiny, soul-like entity, having its own inner states, its own perspective on the universe.

You can picture a monad, imperfectly, as a point of view with no physical extension. It does not push or pull on other monads; they do not interact mechanically. Instead, God has ordered them in such a way that their inner developments correspond to each other. This is Leibniz’s celebrated doctrine of pre-established harmony. When you decide to raise your arm, your mind does not push your body; rather, your mind’s series of perceptions and volitions unfolds in parallel with your body’s physical movements, because both have been synchronized from the outset. When billiard balls collide, there is no deep causal interaction; there is a harmony in their sequences of states. At the bottom, the world is a vast society of monads, each expressing the universe from its own angle.

At first glance, this sounds like metaphysical science fiction. How could this strange picture matter for ethics? But for Leibniz, it is central. If every substance is, at root, a center of perception and appetite, then the world is not a dead machine. It is more like a community of living points of view. Human beings are monads of a high order, with rationality and self-awareness. Animals are monads with sensation but without abstract reasoning. Even what we call “inanimate” matter is grounded in lower monads with dim perceptions. God is the supreme monad, the necessary being whose essence includes existence, who perceives all possible worlds and chooses one to actualize.

Morally, this yields several consequences. First, it means that the universe is saturated with value-laden perspectives. A world like that calls for respect. To trample a creature is not to rearrange inert stuff; it is to affect a being with its own inner life. Second, it means that our own minds are not isolated bubbles. Each of us is, in Leibniz’s favorite metaphor, a mirror of the universe, reflecting it from a particular standpoint. The human task, then, includes polishing that mirror: clarifying our perceptions, correcting errors, expanding our understanding, and aligning our appetites with the true order of goods.

Leibniz is acutely aware that, looked at from ground level, the world hardly looks “best.” He knows about war, disease, cruelty, stupidity. He lives through dynastic succession crises, religious bigotry, and the dull inertia of courts. He himself is often frustrated: his great projects for scientific academies, church reunification, and legal reform are half realized at best. Yet he persists in arguing, most famously in his work “Theodicy,” that this world — with all its apparent defects — is the best of all possible worlds.

This phrase will later be mocked by Voltaire in “Candide,” where the character Pangloss repeats “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds” while disasters pile up around him. But for Leibniz, the claim is not naive optimism; it is part of a sophisticated attempt to reconcile three things: that God is perfectly good, that God is all-powerful and all-wise, and that the world includes real evil.

The structure of his reasoning goes like this. Before creating anything, God has in his intellect an infinity of possible worlds: complete ways reality could be, each with its own laws, histories, and configurations of creatures. Each possible world includes a pattern of goods and evils: pleasures and pains, virtues and vices, beauties and deformities. God, as a perfectly wise and good being, does not create arbitrarily. He surveys these possibilities and chooses to actualize that world in which the overall balance of perfection is greatest — not necessarily the one with the least evil, but the one in which the goods, considered with all their necessary connections and consequences, outweigh the evils in the richest way.

In such a picture, some evils might be logically connected to greater goods in ways we do not see. The courage of a rescuer presupposes the danger of a fire. Forgiveness presupposes wrongdoing. The patience of a caregiver presupposes illness. On a larger scale, the existence of finite rational creatures implies the possibility of error and sin: if beings are to be genuinely free, capable of rational love, they must be able to misuse that freedom. A world with free beings but no possibility of moral failure may not be genuinely possible. So God, in creating a world with free agents, permits their sins, not because God delights in them, but because they are a byproduct of a valuable gift.

We may feel the pull of an objection: could God not have made a world with free creatures who in fact never sin? Leibniz’s answer is subtle. It might be that any world with creatures of that sort, given their natures and the range of choices open to them, will include some sins. If God wants a world populated by rational agents whose lives are not purely robotic, God must accept that some will go wrong. God could create a world of automata who always do what is “right” by design, but that would be a lesser good. A world of morally significant freedom, even with the resulting evils, may be better overall.

The moral consequence of this view is not intended to be passivity. Leibniz does not say: since this is the best possible world, everything that happens is good, so we should not resist injustice or alleviate suffering. On the contrary, the very structure of created reality includes secondary causes, including us. Part of what makes this world best may be precisely that it contains creatures who, out of understanding and compassion, fight evil, comfort the afflicted, and improve conditions. Our efforts are among the goods that God foresaw in choosing this world. When you act justly, you are not correcting God’s mistake; you are enacting one of the reasons God had for creating this whole arrangement.

This leads into Leibniz’s explicit ethical reflections. He defines justice in a way that goes beyond mere legality or fairness in transactions. For him, justice is “the charity of the wise.” That phrase compresses a lot. Charity, in the classical Christian vocabulary he inherits, is not mere almsgiving; it is love — the love that wills the good of the other. Wisdom is the clear understanding of the true order of goods and of the place of each creature in the whole. So justice, at its highest, is not just giving each his due according to a contract; it is loving others in a way informed by knowledge of their real good and of our shared place in the rational order of the universe.

He distinguishes between different levels of justice. At the lowest level, there is what he calls “strict right”: rules that govern contracts, property, and basic non-injury. This is the domain of positive law: do not steal, do not defraud, keep your agreements. Above that is equity: the adjustment of rigid rules to particular circumstances to avoid harsh results. Above that still is what he sometimes calls “piety” or “universal justice”: a benevolent concern for the welfare of all, grounded in love of God and recognition of the rational kinship of all minds. A decent society must enforce the basic level; wise individuals and communities aim at the highest.

Because of his legal training, Leibniz thinks a lot about how law should be structured. He wants laws to be clear, coherent, and oriented not just to punishment but to the promotion of the common good. He is suspicious of cruelty and unnecessary harshness. He believes that rulers have a duty to seek the happiness of their subjects, understood not as mere pleasure but as well-being in a broad sense: security, education, opportunity for virtue. He is, in some respects, an early welfare thinker, though still working within a monarchical and aristocratic framework.

His rationalism extends into his views on international relations. He imagines, sometimes fancifully, a Europe unified not by conquest but by shared institutions: academies of science, common legal principles, cooperative development projects. He corresponds with princes about canal systems, industrial improvements, and educational reforms. He is not naive about power; he knows rulers act from ambition and fear. But he persistently tries to steer them toward projects that, in his mind, align with God’s rational plan: increase knowledge, reduce pointless suffering, advance prosperity in ways that allow more people to develop their minds and characters.

On the level of the individual, Leibniz’s ethics centers on rational love. To act well is to act in a way that fits with the true order of things, which means loving God above all and loving creatures according to their place in that order. Love, he says in one formulation, is to find one’s pleasure in another’s happiness. When you genuinely love, you are not simply using the other to satisfy your own desires; you are rejoicing in their flourishing. The more your understanding expands, the wider the circle of beings whose good you can appreciate: family, friends, compatriots, humanity, and, in an abstract way, all rational creatures anywhere in the universe.

Here again, his metaphysics supports the ethics. If every mind is a mirror of the universe, then in loving another mind you are, in a sense, loving another perspective on the whole. You are acknowledging that the universe is richer than your solitary viewpoint. Humility, then, is not self-hatred; it is the recognition that your perspective is partial and that others, too, are centers of value. Pride, by contrast, is the illusion that your own point of view is absolute, that your own good can be separated from the good of others and the order of the whole.

Leibniz’s belief in the intelligibility and goodness of the world can look, especially from our more disillusioned age, like denial. After all, he did not face the industrialized wars and genocides of the twentieth century. But he did know brutal conflict, famine, plague, and the pettiness of courts. He also knew disappointment. Late in life, many of his projects were stalled or ignored. The House of Hanover, whose interests he had served faithfully, ascended to the British throne in the person of George I — but Leibniz was not invited to London. He died in 1716 in Hanover, largely neglected by the very court he had enriched with his service and his historical work. At his funeral, it is said, nearly no one came.

From one angle, this is a sad ending: the great rationalist dying without earthly recognition. From another angle, it is consistent with his moral outlook. Recognition, fame, and immediate success are secondary goods, contingent on accident and politics. What matters more, in his scheme, is the inner alignment of the soul with truth and charity. If his ideas have any validity, then the real measure of his life is not how many courtiers attended his burial, but how he contributed to the growing clarity of human understanding and to the structures of justice and cooperation that subsequent generations could build on.

In Western moral philosophy, Leibniz’s legacy is complex. His principle of sufficient reason becomes a cornerstone for later rationalists and idealists. It also provokes reactions: empiricists and skeptics will push back against the idea that every fact must be intelligible to human reason. His theodicy sets the terms for much later discussion of evil and divine providence, even when later thinkers reject his optimistic conclusion. His idea of justice as “the charity of the wise” quietly informs strands of natural law theory and Christian ethics. Even his way of combining legal, political, and metaphysical thought prefigures later attempts to ground human rights and international law in a rational conception of human nature and the common good.

For your listeners, Leibniz can serve as a kind of counterpoint to the darker visions in your series. He does not deny evil, but he refuses to let it dictate the final interpretation of reality. He insists that the universe is, in its deepest structure, ordered toward good, and that our rational capacities are not absurd flukes in a meaningless cosmos but instruments designed to grasp and participate in that order. His optimism, properly understood, is not the shallow claim that “everything that happens is great,” but the deeper claim that there is a rational pattern in which our efforts toward justice, compassion, and understanding have a real place and significance.

Imagine him near the end of his life, in a study cluttered with manuscripts: drafts of mathematical papers, half-finished histories, theological notes, diplomatic letters, sketches for machines. Outside, the Hanoverian court is busy with its own intrigues; across the Channel, Newton has already become a household name in scientific circles. Leibniz sits hunched over a page, still trying to perfect a sentence about God, or the soul, or law. He puts down his pen, looks up, and for a moment listens to the sounds of the city: cart wheels, church bells, human voices. In all that messy noise, he hears not chaos but the expression of countless monads, each living its own story within a larger rational symphony whose full score only God can see.

To live well, in Leibniz’s world, is to act as if that symphony is real: to think carefully, love widely, seek reasons, resist cruelty, build structures of law and cooperation, and trust — not blindly, but with reflective hope — that our finite efforts are not wasted in the void, but taken up into a larger order we only glimpse. It is an ethic for people who refuse both despair and complacency, who want to understand and to act, and who are willing to believe that the world, for all its scars, is not an accident, but a rationally chosen scene for the drama of finite spirits learning to love.
