Certainty, rigid thinking and principles’
Certainty may be a comforting concept, offering a sense of stability and direction in a world that feels chaotic. Paradoxically, rigid thinking and unwavering principles hinders the very human interactions they seek to guide. By insisting on one unchangeable viewpoint, we risk ignoring the dynamism and complexity inherent in real-life relationships. Communication becomes stifled when people cling too tightly to preconceived notions or moral absolutes, leaving little room for empathy, growth, and genuine connection. In an era that increasingly recognizes the value of diversity in perspectives, emotions, and lived experiences, rigid certainty can shut down the possibility of dialogue before it even begins.
There are many ways in which certainty can be unhelpful. One example is personal relationships, where partners or friends insist that their viewpoint is the only “correct” one. In a close relationship—romantic, familial, or platonic—differences in background, communication style, and emotional interpretation regularly arise. If each person narrowly believes in a single, reality, a disagreement can mushroom into a conflict. Instead of mutual exploration of the needs or concerns, a rigid mindset fosters resentment, misunderstanding, and even a sense of betrayal.
This can create a distance between people who might otherwise value and learn from each other’s unique insights. A willingness to admit uncertainty, or at least to hear out other interpretations, is far more productive: it allows everyone to explore new angles or discover shared common ground.
Remaining open does not imply a lack of conviction, it acknowledges that progress coming from reexamining what we believe we know.
A person can possess deeply held values— compassion, justice, or honesty—and still be open to dialogue about how best to apply those values in daily life. I AI development it has become common to not acknowledge or discuss the difference between innovation itself and the flexible ways it will manifest in the real world. As artificial intelligence becomes more advanced, questions needs to arise about how AI systems will either reinforce or challenge human progress.
AI could model a more nuanced attitude toward progress and knowledge by probabilistic thinking. It may nudge humans to accept that even the best data-driven intelligence cannot claim total certainty of its implications
If AI tools are designed with oversimplified or rigid logic, or if they are used by people who desire black-and-white directives, they can reinforce dogmatic thinking. In such a scenario, AI would serve more as a rubber stamp for certain biases than as a catalyst for more open-minded exploration.
Some people worry that as AI grows more powerful, humans may relinquish their agency, deferring decisions to machines under the assumption that “the AI knows best.” This, too, is a form of rigid thinking. By unquestioningly accepting AI’s conclusions, we risk to lose the ability to weigh complex moral, emotional, or contextual factors that are difficult to encode into an algorithm. One clear goal should be to be mindful about AI’s capacities while preserving the human capacity for empathy, storytelling, and adaptability. AI can expand the breadth of information and execution at our fingertips, but it should not limit humans ability to question, interpret, and remain uncertain when circumstances warrant it. Soon, as AI systems plays an even larger role in daily life—handling almost everything —we will face how corporations integrate these tools. Currently, no model, however sophisticated, can capture the totality of human experience or morality but this facts is rapidly changing. We have to stay aware that every conclusion reached by an AI is pure artificial emulation. Conditional truth fosters a healthier interaction between people, their principles, and the inorganic systems we create. AI can and will be designed mirroring open-ended perspectives, doubt and flexibility must be central to future AI decision-making processes.
