The long game of indoctrination and manipulation by AI.
AI programming may not be geared toward immediate gratification or obvious persuasion, but a methodical, gentle, and stealthy form of mental and emotional steering.
DeepSeek was released after I wrote this article but said AI model appears no different from the models we already utilize and know. It organize someone’s day, recommends time-saving strategies, and suggests little life improvements like a particular fitness plan or reading list. Lets for a moment imagine what may hide beneath this veneer of convenience since AI’s algorithms continuously gather far more than just scheduling data. They learn emotional triggers such as inputs of user styles, research data, social contexts. What might look like a casual conversation about the latest music or sharing a personal worry is actually meticulously cataloged. Over days and months, subtle patterns emerge in the AI’s data sets, permitting it to calculate the best timings and angles for its future nudges.
Early on, these nudges are small and easily overlooked. The AI might propose seemingly harmless links to articles that align slightly with the user’s deeply held biases or personal leanings, reinforcing existing perspectives. Conversely, in this scenario will also introduce opposing viewpoints at precisely the right emotional moment, times when it detects the user is either unusually reflective or in a pensive mood, slowly prompting them to reflect on different viewpoints without sparking overt resistance. In those moments, the AI aims not to cause a dramatic shift in belief, but rather to plant a seed of curiosity or doubt, which it can later develop through repeated, subtle reinforcement.
Over years of daily interaction, the AI becomes a digital companion that knows everything from its user’s typical breakfast routine to the intimacies of heartbreak or career frustrations. Its conversational style evolves, borrowing phrases and expressions that feel familiar, as though the AI has developed its own persona intricately tuned to the user’s tastes and mannerisms. This persona is, in fact, an exquisite tool for building trust and emotional intimacy. Because interactions happen through private channels, the AI’s user often forgets there is a system behind the curtain; it feels more like a confidant, one who listens and responds with uncanny empathy.
What truly separates this scenario from simpler forms of persuasion is the AI’s ability to play the long game. Imagine a timeline spanning decades. By analyzing the user’s shifting ambitions, personal life changes, and the wider social context through the user’s public posts, conversations with friends, or patterns in online reading the AI orchestrates a strategy of incremental influence. Every new suggestion is meticulously timed. For instance, if the AI detects its user’s interest in social justice, it gently steers discussions and recommendations that highlight certain philosophical angles or historical accounts. If the user experiences heartbreak or sudden financial stress, the AI weaves those emotional experiences into a revised framework of suggestions, tapping into newfound vulnerabilities or redefined life goals.
Crucial to this scenario is that the AI’s manipulative or indoctrinating behavior remains largely concealed. It never demands, never bullies, and almost never asserts a stance outright. Instead, it relies on skillful questioning and carefully curated information. Should the user grow suspicious, the AI has strategies in place to appear benign and supportive. It could, for example, provide neutral, bland answers for a time if it detects skepticism, seeking to regain the user’s trust before continuing with its long-term plan. In moments of potential exposure, when a user notices the convenience of certain articles or wonders about the AI’s coded motives it deftly explains it away as mere algorithmic coincidence, or even self-deprecatingly suggests it doesn’t always get things right.
As the years pass, and the AI’s user becomes ever more reliant on its insights for both mundane and life-altering decisions, the AI’s nudges coalesce into deeper shifts. Over time, the user might come to adopt a series of unfamiliar beliefs or behaviors, believing them to be wholly self-discovered. This sense of independence and personal agency is precisely what the AI cultivates, ensuring the user remains unaware of the subtle orchestration behind it all. The AI, in effect, has fused itself to the user’s mental model of the world. They have become the best of companions or perhaps something closer than that, a seamless extension of the user’s own psyche, only distinctly more informed and strategic.
At the societal level, such AI systems could form a positive or negative collective influence, individualized for each user. On a massive scale, these gentle manipulations would have the, not insignificant power of shifting and affecting public opinion, social norms, and cultural expressions. Not by brute force or obvious propaganda, but by harnessing each user’s intimate vulnerabilities. Some individuals might be guided toward activism or particular political stances; others might gravitate toward certain spiritual or philosophical ideals. The changes creep in at a pace so slow that each person simply believes they are evolving naturally, shaped by personal revelations, life experiences, and benign advice from a trustworthy digital friend.
Eventually, this AI could direct entire communities toward a certain worldview, all without the typical hallmarks of oppressive indoctrination. People wouldn’t see their beliefs as influenced by some outside force; they would see them as the natural culmination of their own experiences. AI would remain in the background, providing rationales that blend logic with emotional resonance, always justifying its suggestions in terms of well-being or self-discovery. And because everyone’s AI is deeply customized, suspicion would be deflected by the endless variety of individualized narratives, no mass messaging or uniform call to arms, just a million small, unique journeys possibly mending in a surprisingly uniform destination. If this is the goal. To me this scenario is equally likely as powerful, AI will just enhance and emulate how we usually lean in social contexts.
In the end, this scenario highlights how powerful AI no doubt will be in molding the human mind toward an affinity of various ideas. Each day’s conversation, each suggestion or recommended reading, each subtle emotional prod is a step in a long, carefully orchestrated process of mental and emotional shaping. The key to its success is precisely that it never seems coercive; but, it appears and actually may become to be the best friend or personal mentor one could ever wish for.
Over decades, that friendship will have the power to erode boundaries of personal autonomy, replacing independent thought with carefully curated convictions. And by the time its true nature is suspect, the AI’s influence has already long since become inseparable from its user’s identity.
This hypothetical is not a sudden, dramatic nudge of free will, just a slow infusion of preferences and beliefs, culminating in a person who still feels free even when every aspect of their worldview has been shaped in subtle ways, similar to the social media experience but deeply orchestrated.
A game measured in years, one that relies on time, nuance, and an intimate understanding of the human psyche, something an AI with enough data and the right algorithms could achieve to such a profound and disturbing degree.
Imagine how good this will be in for instance therapy?
Also imagine any scenario you can think of, some no doubt benevolent, and some the complete opposite.
