We Don’t Know More Than Before. We Just Pretend
We like to tell ourselves that knowledge accumulates in a straight line. That each generation knows more than the last. That the past was ignorance and the present is clarity.
But that story is increasingly hard to defend.
In practice, what we often call “knowing more” is simply having more information, more papers, more models, more classifications — not deeper understanding. The result is a paradox modern institutions are uncomfortable admitting: as information increases, clarity often decreases.
We are not suffering from a lack of data. We are suffering from an excess of unresolved interpretation.
Modern knowledge systems reward production, not synthesis. Papers are written because they must be written. Distinctions are drawn because novelty is required. Micro-differences are inflated into significance because careers depend on differentiation. Over time, provisional interpretations harden into orthodoxy — not because they are true, but because they are cited.
This is not how wisdom grows. It is how sediment forms.
Layer upon layer of models, theories, and claims accumulate without being meaningfully integrated or pruned. Contradictions coexist. Weak ideas linger indefinitely. Disproven assumptions are rarely removed; they are simply rebranded or quietly ignored. What emerges is not a clearer picture of reality, but a denser fog of authority.
The problem is not science. It is scientism — the belief that whatever fits current methods is real, and whatever does not is dismissed as false rather than unknown. This collapses humility into certainty and treats the limits of our tools as the limits of existence.
History should have cured us of this mistake.
Every major scientific advance emerged from what was once unmeasurable, ridiculed, or dismissed. Atoms, germs, deep time, neuroplasticity, plate tectonics — none were “false” before they were detectable. They were simply beyond the reach of prevailing instruments and frameworks.
Yet each generation repeats the same error: mistaking the edge of its knowledge for the edge of reality.
Early human societies understood something we have largely forgotten — that uncertainty is not a failure mode. They lived inside ambiguity without needing to resolve it into rigid categories. Knowledge was carried in stories, rituals, and practices that tolerated contradiction and change. Meaning was preserved without requiring final answers.
Modern institutions cannot tolerate that openness. They demand closure. Models must be decisive. Conclusions must be stated. Ambiguity is treated as weakness. “We don’t know yet” has become professionally dangerous.
So we replace humility with confidence. And confidence with authority.
The result is a strange inversion: we know more facts than any civilization in history, yet struggle to form coherent worldviews. We can sequence genomes and date ancient sites to remarkable precision, yet remain unsure what those facts actually mean in human terms. Our tools are extraordinary. Our synthesis is impoverished.
This is why it increasingly feels as though we know less, not more.
Not because knowledge has vanished — but because wisdom requires restraint, and restraint is no longer rewarded.
The most honest sentence in science is also the rarest: This is provisional.
Until our institutions value synthesis over volume, humility over certainty, and understanding over classification, the accumulation of information will continue to masquerade as progress.
And we will keep mistaking confidence for knowledge — even as insight quietly slips further away.
